As one of the standout titles from Nintendo’s exclusive partnership with PlatinumGames, Astral Chain captured the imaginations of fans when it launched in 2019. Its blend of fast-paced combat, intriguing story, and unique dual-character gameplay made it an instant hit with both critics and players alike.
Now, as we move further into 2025, rumours and speculation are swirling about the potential for an Astral Chain 2, and fans are eagerly awaiting any confirmation from Nintendo or PlatinumGames.
But what do we know about the possibility of a sequel, and what’s fueling the growing buzz?

The Success of Astral Chain
Before diving into the rumors, let’s take a look at why Astral Chain has such a dedicated following in the first place. Developed by PlatinumGames and directed by Takahisa Taura, the game combined action, puzzle-solving, and exploration with a unique combat system that involved controlling two characters simultaneously: the protagonist and their “Legion” partner.
Set in a dystopian future where humanity battles mysterious creatures called the “Chimeras,” Astral Chain offered a fresh take on the action genre. The game’s colorful, cyberpunk-inspired world, deep lore, and intense combat mechanics made it stand out in a crowded market. The praise for its originality and style led to Astral Chain becoming one of the most celebrated exclusives on the Nintendo Switch.
Despite its success, PlatinumGames and Nintendo have remained quiet about a potential sequel. But rumors have continued to circulate, with whispers suggesting that Astral Chain 2 could be on the horizon. So, what’s fueling these speculations?

Rumors and Leaks: What We’ve Heard So Far
So apparently the game started development in 2021. It went 6 months without any work done to it. then In 2022 it went into full development with virtually the same team. Then at some point in development it was rebooted by Nintendo.
Here are some more quick details but all this information is from before the reboot.
1. Direct sequel.
2. Same protagonist.
3. Villain named Maxwell.
4. Branching paths with different chapters depending on choices.
5. One level was on the coast.
6. It had new legions.
The game was planned for the Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo even wanted an Astral Chain 3. It now remains to be seen what’s the future of the project since things at Platinum Games are in a weird place right now.
What Could Astral Chain 2 Look Like?
If the rumours turn out to be true and Astral Chain 2 is indeed in development, what can we expect from the potential sequel?

- Expanded Combat and New Legions
One of the standout features of the original Astral Chain was the dual-character combat system, where players controlled both the protagonist and their Legion partner. A sequel could expand this mechanic, introducing new Legions with even more diverse abilities, allowing for more complex and strategic combat. PlatinumGames could refine this system, adding deeper combos and better integration with the environment.
- A Richer World and Storyline
The world of Astral Chain was intriguing, with its mix of dystopian sci-fi and cyberpunk aesthetics. A sequel could delve deeper into the mysteries of the Chimeras, exploring new dimensions and perhaps even bringing more factions or new cities into play. Fans are eager to learn more about the history of the Astral Chain universe, and a sequel could flesh out the lore and expand on the story threads left unresolved in the first game.
- Improved Graphics and Technical Enhancements
Given the advancements in gaming hardware, it’s likely that Astral Chain 2 would benefit from improved graphics and more sophisticated technology. While the original game was already visually stunning, a sequel could take full advantage of the Nintendo Switch’s capabilities, offering smoother performance and even more detailed environments.
- New Gameplay Mechanics
While Astral Chain introduced an innovative and unique gameplay loop, Astral Chain 2 could refine and expand upon these mechanics. Fans are hoping for new abilities, more complex puzzles, and perhaps even multiplayer or co-op features that would enhance the experience further.

When Could We See an Announcement?
As of now, there is no official word from Nintendo or PlatinumGames about Astral Chain 2, and we don’t know when a potential sequel might be announced. Some speculate that an official announcement could come in 2025, with the game possibly launching in 2026 or later. If I had to put money on it I would expect an announcement for the game before the end of the year maybe even at the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct.
For now, fans can only speculate, but the future of Astral Chain remains bright, and we’ll be watching closely for any updates that may reveal more about the potential next chapter in this critically acclaimed series.
