Eidos-Montreal, Another Embracer Studio, Suffers Large Scale Layoffs

Not Again

Eidos-Montréal, the studio behind titles like Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, has announced significant layoffs affecting up to 75 employees. The company stated that these layoffs result from the conclusion of a specific project mandate and are not a reflection of the affected individuals’ dedication or skills. Unfortunately, Eidos-Montréal lacks the capacity to reassign these staff members to other ongoing projects.

This development follows a series of challenges for the studio, including the cancellation of a new Deus Ex game and a previous round of layoffs affecting 97 positions in January 2024. These measures are part of broader restructuring efforts within Embracer Group, Eidos-Montréal’s parent company, which has faced financial difficulties, including a $2 billion investment deal that fell through.

Embracer Group has been undergoing significant restructuring, resulting in studio closures and project cancellations. The company plans to split into three separate publicly traded entities, aiming to stabilize and refocus its operations.

These layoffs highlight the ongoing challenges within the gaming industry, as companies navigate financial constraints and project uncertainties.
