In a surprise move that nobody saw coming, Jagex has stealth-released RuneScape: Dragonwilds, a brand-new survival crafting game set in the RuneScape universe. The game is available right now on Steam in Early Access and marks a bold genre shift for the studio best known for its MMORPG roots.
Developed quietly over the last three years, Dragonwilds throws players into the untamed continent of Ashenfall, a dangerous and corrupted world brimming with Anima energy, ancient Dragonkin vaults, and iconic RuneScape monsters. Unlike its MMORPG predecessor, this entry blends fantasy survival mechanics with light RPG progression—think Valheim meets RuneScape with a splash of Soulslike combat.
What You’re Getting in Early Access
At launch, Dragonwilds supports both solo and up to four-player online co-op. Players can expect:
- Skill progression up to level 50 (with a level 99 cap planned for full release).
- Combat mechanics featuring dodge rolls, parries, and reactive AI.
- Environment manipulation, using magical “Anima” energy to reshape the world.
- Base building, survival systems, and light crafting elements.
- PvP support, with friendly fire toggles for added chaos.
Character progression carries across all worlds, meaning players can hop between servers or private games without starting from scratch.
Jagex has also confirmed Dragonwilds will receive major content updates every 3–4 months, with smaller patches and hotfixes in between. The Early Access roadmap teases biome expansions, new dungeons, and high-level enemies inspired by RuneScape’s deep lore.
Built in Unreal Engine 5
Unlike the Java roots of classic RuneScape, Dragonwilds is powered by Unreal Engine 5, giving it a modern visual overhaul without straying too far from its medieval fantasy aesthetic. While the UI and spell mechanics feel distinctly “RuneScape,” the world design and lighting are a clear leap forward.
A New Era for RuneScape?
This isn’t Jagex’s first attempt to expand the RuneScape brand beyond its flagship MMO, but it may be its boldest. Rather than offering a stripped-down companion game, Dragonwilds stands on its own as a complete experience—and an entirely different genre. Early community feedback has been cautiously optimistic, praising its nostalgic callbacks, combat systems, and ambition.
Time will tell if Dragonwilds can capture lightning in a bottle twice, but one thing’s clear: Jagex just put the industry on notice.
RuneScape: Dragonwilds is available now via Steam Early Access. No official release date for the full version has been announced.
