Insider Gaming has learned that a new Frostpunk title is reportedly in early development at 11 bit studios, with a tentative release window set for 2027. Sources close to the project, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, say the game will continue to expand on the bleak, post-apocalyptic survival themes the franchise is known for—this time exploring new narrative frontiers and gameplay systems.
The follow-up to Frostpunk 2, which released in September 2024 to critical and commercial success, is said to be “more ambitious in scale and scope” than any prior entry in the series. Early concepts reportedly suggest a departure from the traditional frozen city-builder format, leaning more heavily into resource diplomacy, regional faction dynamics, and survival strategy on a continental scale.
“It’s not just about surviving the cold anymore—it’s about deciding the future of civilization,” said one source familiar with the game’s early direction.
What’s Next for Frostpunk?
While 11 bit studios has yet to publicly confirm the next installment, the Polish developer has teased multiple unannounced projects in investor calls and dev blogs over the past six months. The studio previously stated it was “committed to building on its core IPs,” signaling more content from both Frostpunk and This War of Mine universes.
Frostpunk 2 introduced a petroleum-based economy and ideological rifts between different social classes. If insider reports are accurate, the next title may raise the stakes further by involving multiple city-states, cooperative and competitive play, and long-form decision-making that spans in-game decades.
A Long Wait—But Worth It?
Although 2027 is a long way off, development on large-scale strategy games often spans multiple years. Sources say the team is currently in pre-production, with a small group handling world-building and early prototyping. Full-scale development is expected to ramp up by early 2026.
11 bit studios declined to comment when contacted by Insider Gaming.
We’ll update this story as more information becomes available.
