Ubisoft has officially unveiled the Year 1 roadmap for Assassin’s Creed Shadows, giving fans a detailed glimpse at what to expect after launch — and it’s packed. From expanded story content to gameplay refinements and New Game Plus, Ubisoft is clearly setting the stage for a long-tail experience that goes well beyond the base campaign.
Here’s everything we know so far about the first year of Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
New Story Content Incoming — and It’s Free
Kicking things off in May, players will receive The Works of Luis Frois, a free story quest that further develops the Jesuit missionary’s role in the main narrative. It’s a smart choice: Frois is a real historical figure whose writings provide crucial insight into feudal Japan during the arrival of Westerners, making him a strong fit for Shadows’ dual-protagonist approach.
That same month, Ubisoft will roll out quality-of-life updates based on community feedback. These include difficulty options, new immersive toggles, and UI adjustments — laying the groundwork for a smoother overall experience right from the start.
Parkour Gets the Boost Fans Have Been Waiting For
June will see one of the most requested updates in Assassin’s Creed history: enhanced parkour. Ubisoft is bringing back beloved mechanics like vertical back ejects and side ejects, along with a new mid-air grab that lets players latch onto vertical awnings or ledges when missing a jump. It’s a small touch that recalls the series’ freerunning glory days (Ezio trilogy, anyone?) and should add a fluidity that’s been missing in recent entries.
Additional updates include:
- An improved alarm system for more dynamic stealth encounters in the open world
- Immersive Mode settings to disable stealth outlines and UI elements
- A helmet toggle option during cutscenes, letting players maintain immersion or show off custom looks

Claws of Awaji – The First Major Expansion
Later in 2025, Shadows will receive its first full expansion, Claws of Awaji. Set on Awaji Island, the DLC introduces over 10 hours of new gameplay featuring brand-new enemies, allies, and the debut of a bo staff weapon for the shinobi protagonist, Naoe.
Importantly, Claws of Awaji will be free for all pre-order customers, echoing Ubisoft’s strategy from Valhalla and Odyssey, where early adopters were heavily rewarded.

New Game Plus & More to Come
Rounding out the Year 1 content is the highly anticipated New Game Plus mode, which allows players to replay the story with retained gear and progression. While a staple in RPGs and increasingly common in Ubisoft’s portfolio, it’s good to see NG+ confirmed this early.
Beyond that, players can expect:
- Additional free story drops that flesh out supporting characters
- New codex entries expanding the in-game historical lore
- Assassin’s Creed Projects: Ubisoft hasn’t detailed what these are, but insiders suggest event-based challenges and deeper connections to Infinity
- Ongoing premium store content for cosmetic upgrades
- Animus Exchange updates with new in-game unlockables
A Strategic Shift Toward Longevity
Ubisoft appears to be doubling down on community-focused support and RPG-style progression. It’s a clear continuation of the studio’s post-Origins philosophy — large open worlds, live-service-like updates, and a strong emphasis on keeping players engaged for the long haul.
Whether this strategy resonates with legacy fans remains to be seen. But with parkour refinements, thoughtful historical storytelling, and a commitment to free updates, Assassin’s Creed Shadows may strike a better balance between old-school design and modern expectations.
