Gears of War: Reloaded Officially Announced – And Yes, It’s Coming to PS5

The War That Started It All—Reloaded

In a move few could have predicted just a few years ago, Microsoft has officially revealed Gears of War: Reloaded—a full-scale remaster of the original Gears of War—and confirmed it’s launching not only on Xbox Series X|S and PC, but also on PlayStation 5.

Set to release on August 26, 2025, Gears of War: Reloaded marks the first time the franchise, which helped define the Xbox 360 era, will make an appearance on Sony’s hardware. It’s a landmark moment in Microsoft’s evolving multiplatform strategy, signaling a continued shift away from strict exclusivity for some of its key IP.

A True Remaster, Not Just a Touch-Up

Built using Unreal Engine 5 and based on the 2015 Ultimate Edition as a foundation, Reloaded is described as a top-to-bottom remaster rather than a simple upscale. It will support 4K resolution at 60FPS in campaign mode and up to 120FPS in multiplayer, with enhanced lighting, new textures, and improved post-processing effects.

According to sources familiar with the project, Reloaded also features seamless transitions between campaign chapters—eliminating load screens entirely—and bundles in all previously released DLC, including the extra Act originally exclusive to PC.

On the multiplayer front, Reloaded comes fully stocked with every map and mode from the original game and its subsequent expansions. It also introduces cross-platform play and progression across PS5, Xbox Series consoles, and PC.

Pricing, Upgrades, and Game Pass

Microsoft is launching Gears of War: Reloaded at a budget-friendly price of $39.99 USD which is approximately $61.00 AUD, and Xbox players who previously purchased the Ultimate Edition will receive the new version for free. The game will also be available day one on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

This move follows Microsoft’s recent multiplatform experiments, which saw games like Hi-Fi Rush, Sea of Thieves, and Grounded land on PlayStation hardware. The difference this time? Gears of War isn’t a niche title—it’s one of Xbox’s most iconic franchises.

Why Now?

While Microsoft hasn’t issued a detailed comment on the decision, sources close to the company suggest Reloaded is part of a broader initiative to “expand audience reach” ahead of the release of Gears of War: E-Day, the long-anticipated prequel announced last year.

Reloaded is both a celebration and a test,”. “It’s about honouring the legacy of Gears while seeing what a wider platform strategy could mean for its future.”

The company appears to be taking a similar approach to what it did with Halo: The Master Chief Collection, gradually building momentum for a franchise refresh while introducing it to new players.

What This Means for Xbox

With Gears of War now joining the likes of Minecraft, Call of Duty, and Sea of Thieves on PlayStation, the Xbox brand is clearly evolving. While some core fans may question the long-term identity of Xbox without strict exclusivity, Microsoft seems focused on ecosystem growth rather than console lock-in.

At the time of writing, Halo remains the only first-party megaton franchise that hasn’t jumped ship—even if rumours of a PS5 port for Halo: The Master Chief Collection continue to swirl.

Gears of War: Reloaded launches August 26 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
