Final Fantasy VII Remake Trilogy Confirmed for Nintendo Switch 2, Square Enix Says

Cloud Strikes Twice—And a Third Time—on Nintendo’s Next-Gen Console.

Square Enix has officially confirmed that the entire Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy is headed to the Nintendo Switch 2, marking a major third-party win for Nintendo’s next-gen hardware. The announcement came during a recent Nintendo Creator’s Voice presentation, where series director Naoki Hamaguchi revealed that Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade will launch as a Switch 2 launch title on June 5, 2025—with Rebirth and the third installment also in development for the platform.

“Thanks to the Switch 2’s enhanced specs, we’ve been able to bring Midgar to life in full fidelity, both on TV and in handheld mode,” Hamaguchi said. “This marks the beginning of a long-term partnership with Nintendo fans.”

This marks the first time that Final Fantasy VII Remake will be available on a Nintendo platform, and it comes just in time as Nintendo aims to prove that its next-gen handheld can handle AAA third-party games that previously skipped the original Switch.

Remake Intergrade Leads the Charge

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is an upgraded version of the original 2020 release, originally launched for PS5 and PC. It includes improved lighting, faster load times, and the Intermission DLC featuring fan-favorite ninja Yuffie. Intergrade will ship with all of its content intact on the Switch 2, and based on footage shown during the Creator’s Voice segment, it runs natively on the device rather than via cloud streaming.

That’s a crucial detail. Past Final Fantasy games on the Switch—including Kingdom Hearts III and the Cloud Version of Resident Evil Village—received criticism for relying on streaming. But Square Enix appears to be ditching that approach this time, leveraging the Switch 2’s more powerful hardware, reportedly comparable to the PS4 Pro with DLSS-backed upscaling.

Rebirth and Beyond

While Square Enix didn’t provide hard release dates for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth or the yet-unnamed third entry, Hamaguchi confirmed that “the full trilogy is planned” for the Switch 2. That means Rebirth—originally released on PS5 in February 2024—will be ported to Nintendo’s console in the near future, likely sometime in 2026.

“We want all players, no matter where they are, to experience Cloud’s journey from beginning to end,” Hamaguchi added.

That’s a major commitment, and one that reinforces the growing shift among publishers toward supporting Nintendo’s ecosystem more seriously. It also signals that the Switch 2 may have finally cracked the AAA barrier that eluded the original hybrid console for years.

Big Third-Party Push for Switch 2

Square Enix isn’t alone. The Switch 2’s launch window is reportedly stacked with major third-party support, including Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, Resident Evil 4 Remake, and Red Dead Redemption 2. Sources close to Insider Gaming suggest that Nintendo has been actively courting developers since 2022, offering early dev kits and close collaboration to ensure smooth ports.

With Intergrade confirmed and more Final Fantasy content on the way, Square Enix is clearly placing a big bet on the Switch 2’s success.
