Despite a fresh delay to Grand Theft Auto VI that has pushed the game’s launch into May 2026, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick remains adamant the new date is locked in. During a recent earnings call, Zelnick said he would be “very surprised” if Rockstar Games missed this revised release window—a statement signaling a rare show of confidence in an industry notorious for shifting deadlines.
Initially slated for a Fall 2025 launch, GTA 6’s delay caught investors and fans off guard. But Zelnick doubled down on the rationale, stressing Rockstar’s commitment to quality. “Perfection takes time,” he said, adding that the studio’s goal isn’t just to make a great game—it’s to redefine entertainment itself.
“Rockstar is trying to create not just the best video game,” Zelnick said, “but the best thing anyone’s ever seen in entertainment.”
The sentiment echoes Rockstar’s ambition to surpass even its own genre-defining legacy. After all, GTA V has sold more than 190 million copies, becoming one of the best-selling titles in history. The bar isn’t just high—it’s practically in orbit.
Why the Delay?
While no exact reason was provided, industry sources suggest Rockstar needed the extra time to polish systems, optimize performance across platforms, and align the game’s release with broader strategic goals. Insiders close to development have hinted at the game’s immense scope, suggesting it’s by far the most technically ambitious Rockstar title yet.
The delay, however, had immediate consequences. Following the announcement, Take-Two’s stock took a hit, falling roughly 5% as investors recalibrated expectations for FY2025 revenue. Still, the publisher remains bullish. With upcoming releases like Borderlands 4, Mafia: The Old Country, and several unannounced projects, Take-Two expects to rebound swiftly.
No Room for Error
Zelnick’s confident remarks come at a time when delays have become the norm. From Cyberpunk 2077 to Starfield, the industry has learned that release date optimism can backfire. But Zelnick insists GTA 6 is different.
“We’re highly confident in this date. I would be shocked if anything changed at this point,” he told investors, reiterating that Rockstar is on schedule with the extra runway the delay affords.
High Stakes, Higher Expectations
The pressure couldn’t be higher. GTA 6 is arguably the most anticipated game of all time. The December 2023 trailer shattered YouTube records, and community hype has only grown as leaks, rumors, and speculative videos have flooded the internet. Everything from the game’s Vice City setting to its dual protagonists has been endlessly dissected.
As development continues, Rockstar has remained tight-lipped. No gameplay has been shown, and no additional trailers have been teased since the record-breaking announcement. Still, insiders believe marketing will ramp up in late 2025—just about six months before the currently scheduled launch.
The Bottom Line
While another delay is technically still possible—this is game development, after all—Zelnick’s unflinching confidence is notable. For now, May 2026 is the date Rockstar and Take-Two are aiming for, and if Zelnick’s track record is any indication, they intend to hit it.
