Bungie’s highly anticipated upcoming title, Marathon, has hit a major snag following reports that the studio has canceled all paid marketing campaigns tied to the game. This move comes in the wake of a serious plagiarism controversy that has rattled both fans and the development team.
The controversy began when artist Fern “Antireal” Hook revealed that one of her 2017 artworks had been used without permission in Marathon’s game assets. After mounting criticism, Bungie publicly acknowledged the issue, attributing the unauthorized use of the artwork to a former employee. The studio announced it is conducting a thorough review of all in-game assets to ensure no further unauthorized materials remain.
The backlash has had significant consequences beyond public relations. Internally, sources have described a morale drop within Bungie’s development team, with some labelling the atmosphere as “actively hostile.” Compounding the challenges, early feedback from Marathon’s closed alpha was lukewarm, raising questions about the game’s current state.
In response to these events, Bungie and its publishing partner Sony have decided to halt all paid marketing efforts. This includes canceling the planned pre-order campaign originally slated for June, as well as the anticipated open beta in August. Instead, Bungie plans to focus on public playtests to refine the game before launch.
Marathon is still scheduled for release on September 23, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. However, given the ongoing issues surrounding both development and marketing, speculation about a delay continues to grow. Bungie has not officially confirmed any changes to the release date.
This incident serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of asset management and ethical creative practices in game development. Bungie, a studio with a strong reputation built on hits like Halo and Destiny, now faces the challenge of rebuilding trust with its community while steering Marathon toward a successful launch.
