Bandai Namco has finally confirmed a release date for the next entry in its long-running Digimon Story series October 3, 2025. Announced during Sony’s June State of Play broadcast, Digimon Story: Time Stranger is set to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
This is the seventh mainline Digimon Story title and the first to feature full English voiceover. It also marks the franchise’s debut on Xbox platforms, as Bandai Namco continues expanding its flagship monster-collecting RPG beyond its historically PlayStation-centric roots.
A New Direction in Time
First teased back in February during an earlier State of Play, Time Stranger is not a direct sequel to Cyber Sleuth, but a standalone narrative featuring new protagonists: sibling time agents Dan Yuki and Kanan Yuki. The duo must travel through multiple timelines to investigate an impending collapse threatening both the Digital and Human Worlds.
The trailer shown during the June 2025 showcase revealed a range of environments from futuristic cityscapes to corrupted digital wastelands hinting at a more expansive narrative scope and nonlinear storytelling structure than previous entries.
What’s New in Time Stranger?
According to Bandai Namco, Digimon Story: Time Stranger will include:
- Over 200 Digimon, including new additions from Digimon Ghost Game and other recent anime.
- A free camera system, replacing the fixed-angle approach of earlier titles.
- Turn-based combat, refined from Cyber Sleuth with new mechanics like “Time Breaks” and “Chrono Syncs,” allowing party synergy moves based on Digimon bonds.
- A multi-path story with choices that influence which timelines unlock and how Digimon evolve.
- Cross-platform save support via Bandai Namco’s account linking system (PS5 ↔ PC).
This will also be the first game in the series with full 3D exploration in towns and dungeons, and character designs are once again led by Suzuhito Yasuda (Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor, Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth).
Platform & Performance Expectations
Time Stranger is being developed natively for current-gen platforms. While Bandai Namco has not confirmed resolution or framerate targets, internal testing is reportedly aiming for 4K/60FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series X, with the Steam version featuring expanded graphics options.
The game will support English, Japanese, French, and German at launch, and a Day One patch will add New Game+ and additional QoL settings based on community feedback from preview events
Bandai Namco is betting big on Time Stranger not just as a new chapter in the Digimon Story franchise, but as a potential entry point for new fans. The simultaneous multiplatform release, inclusion of English voices, and modern gameplay enhancements suggest a push toward a broader audience possibly in response to the growing popularity of Persona, Pokémon Legends, and other hybrid RPGs.
If Cyber Sleuth was proof that Digimon RPGs could hold their own, Time Stranger could be the breakout moment. We’ll know more when hands-on impressions begin dropping in the months ahead.
