Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja have officially announced Nioh 3, the next major installment in the critically acclaimed samurai action-RPG franchise. Revealed during Sony’s June 2025 PlayStation State of Play showcase, the game is set for an early 2026 release on PlayStation 5 and PC (Steam). But fans won’t have to wait long to get a taste an alpha demo is available now for PS5 players until June 18.
After two successful entries, Nioh 3 promises to build on everything that came before: punishing precision combat, deep character builds, and a setting steeped in Japanese mythology with new mechanics and an entirely new protagonist.
What’s New in Nioh 3?
While Team Ninja hasn’t released a full gameplay breakdown yet, the trailer gave fans plenty to chew on:
- A new protagonist not William, not Hide. The story shifts focus to a mysterious shinobi cursed by a corrupted yokai lineage.
- Expanded combat styles, including new dual-wielding options, stealth mechanics, and a return of the “Yokai Shift” form with added transformation paths.
- Environmental interaction, like knocking enemies off ledges, using fire to ignite tall grass, or collapsing bridges mid-fight.
- Open-region design, suggesting larger, interconnected zones over Nioh 2’s segmented missions.
- A darker, more tragic tone, hinting at themes of betrayal, corruption, and ancestral legacy.
Demo Details
Available right now on the PlayStation Store, the alpha demo is a timed slice of the game’s opening region. It includes a glimpse of the new combat mechanics, a first look at the skill tree changes, and several boss fights to test your patience and reflexes.
The demo will run until June 18, and feedback from players will reportedly shape elements of the final game, much like the first two Nioh titles.
Franchise Legacy
Nioh has grown from a cult hit to one of Team Ninja’s flagship franchises. With over 8 million copies sold across the series as of May 2025, it’s clear there’s a dedicated fanbase hungry for more high-stakes samurai action.
Where FromSoftware carved out the Souls genre, Team Ninja has pushed it into faster, combo-heavy territory and Nioh 3 looks ready to sharpen the edge even further.
Release Window & Platforms
- Release Date: Early 2026
- Platforms: PlayStation 5, PC (Steam)
- Demo Availability: PS5 only, through June 18, 2025
Team Ninja has a reputation for taking feedback seriously—Nioh 2 evolved significantly from its alpha to final release, and Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty followed a similar trajectory. With Nioh 3, the studio is poised to combine fan-favourite systems with more ambitious worldbuilding and player freedom.
If you’ve been craving more yokai-slaying, stamina-managing, weapon-clashing action—this is your call to arms.
