SEGA and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio officially unveiled the final title for Project Century during the Summer Game Fest 2025 showcase. Now known as Stranger Than Heaven, the new IP marks a dramatic departure from the studio’s long running Like a Dragon franchise, introducing players to a grounded, survival-leaning detective thriller set in early-to-mid 20th century Japan.
The reveal trailer, which debuted during the event, offered the first concrete details about the narrative, gameplay, and visual direction. Players assume the role of Detective Mako Daito, a morally conflicted investigator caught in the violent and political undercurrents of a rapidly evolving Japan.
A Period Piece With a Noir Twist
Stranger Than Heaven spans several decades, with the trailer highlighting two primary eras: 1915 and 1943. The setting is a stylized but authentic interpretation of Japanese cities undergoing modernization, featuring neon-lit streets, smoky jazz clubs, and stark class divides. The game’s noir tone is reinforced by an emphasis on heavy dialogue, stylized framing, and morally gray decision-making.
Unlike previous games from the studio, this title appears to lean more heavily into survival mechanics and branching choices. The trailer showed indicators for hunger, thirst, and even hostility levels triggered by actions like smoking. Tooltips and dialogue choices suggest players will need to carefully manage their character’s physical and social state throughout the story.
Gameplay Details and Themes
Stranger Than Heaven is not a traditional RPG like the Like a Dragon series. Instead, it blends survival mechanics with third-person detective gameplay. Players will reportedly be faced with morally loaded decisions, such as whether to spare a known killer, or to align with conflicting political factions as Japan moves toward war and western influence grows.
One standout scene in the trailer shows Mako Daito stepping into a nightclub, only to be drawn into a confrontation with an American agent a moment that signals international intrigue will play a major role.
According to RGG Studio, the game will explore themes of identity, modernity, loyalty, and cultural transformation. While combat mechanics weren’t explicitly detailed, hints of environmental takedowns and gunplay were shown.
Release Window and Platforms
Stranger Than Heaven is slated for a 2026 release. While specific platforms weren’t listed during the announcement, it is expected to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. RGG Studio confirmed that more details on gameplay and story structure will be shared later this year.
Stranger Than Heaven marks a bold new chapter for one of Japan’s most respected developers. With its grounded setting, thematic ambition, and survival-based gameplay systems, it may be the studio’s most experimental project yet.
