In another major play for global gaming dominance, Tencent has acquired a 15.75% stake in Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead Game Studios for $80 million, valuing the Swedish company at over half a billion dollars. The deal, which quietly closed in July 2024 but only recently came to light, signals a new chapter for Arrowhead following the monumental success of its cooperative shooter Helldivers 2.
The PlayStation-published title smashed expectations when it launched earlier in 2024, selling over 12 million copies in its first three months and becoming the fastest selling PlayStation Studios title in history. Arrowhead, previously a niche indie developer known for the original Helldivers and Magicka, suddenly found itself at the centre of the industry’s live-service spotlight. That newfound success turned heads—including those at Tencent.
According to public financial records from Swedish business registry sites, Tencent paid approximately $80 million for its share, implying a valuation of roughly $532 million for the studio. In 2024 alone, Arrowhead reported a turnover just shy of $100 million, with a staggering $76 million in operating profit undoubtedly bolstered by Helldivers 2‘s breakout popularity.
Arrowhead CEO and creative director Johan Pilestedt acknowledged the deal on social media, saying the team wanted to remain largely independent while leveraging Tencent’s global presence—particularly its deep reach into the Chinese gaming market.
“They are great to work with,” Pilestedt said of Tencent, “and we have kept our independence. We run the studio the same as we always have.”
While Tencent’s specific influence over Arrowhead’s future operations is unclear, the move is clearly part of the Chinese giant’s ongoing strategy to expand its global gaming investments. Tencent already holds stakes in major studios such as Riot Games, Epic Games, Ubisoft, FromSoftware, and many more allowing it to quietly shape the future of the industry without always taking centre stage.
Notably, Arrowhead has announced that its next project will be self-funded and self-published, not released under the PlayStation banner. That decision marks a pivotal shift for the studio, which is now flush with cash and creative momentum. While Helldivers 2 continues to evolve as a live-service title, fans are already speculating about what Arrowhead’s next game might be and how Tencent’s involvement could affect it.
For Tencent, this investment is a smart bet. Helldivers 2 has cultivated a passionate, dedicated community with its blend of chaotic co-op action, satirical tone, and evolving galactic war narrative. Arrowhead’s commitment to listening to players and adjusting the live-service model in real time has earned it a level of goodwill that many other studios in the space struggle to maintain.
Whether this partnership results in greater creative freedom or a more strategic push into new markets, one thing is clear: Arrowhead Game Studios is no longer a small time developer. With Tencent now backing a piece of its future, the studio stands poised to become a major force in the next generation of multiplayer gaming.
Stay tuned. The galactic war is just getting started.
