Nintendo has done it again. Just four days after the release of its next-generation console, the Nintendo Switch 2 has already sold over 3.5 million units worldwide, setting a new company record for the fastest-selling hardware in its storied history. With these numbers, the Switch 2 isn’t just breaking records it’s launching a whole new era for Nintendo.
A Historic Launch
Launched globally on June 5, 2025, the Switch 2 wasted no time making an impact. According to official figures from Nintendo, the system reached 3.5 million units sold within its first four days on the market, surpassing even the original Switch’s breakout success back in 2017. For perspective, that’s nearly a quarter of Nintendo’s projected 15 million unit sales for the fiscal year ending March 2026 accomplished in under a week.
Reggie Fils-Aimé may have stepped away, but the philosophy remains: “If it’s not fun, why bother?”
What’s New?
The Switch 2 is more than just a refresh it’s a full-blown upgrade. Sporting a vibrant 1080p OLED screen in handheld mode and supporting 4K resolution when docked, the console delivers a significant performance leap thanks to its new custom processor. Game load times are faster, battery life is extended, and the visuals are sharper than ever.
Nintendo also introduced Joy-Con 2 magnetic, ergonomically redesigned controllers with added haptics and mouse-like pointer capabilities. Multiplayer fans can rejoice with GameChat, a fully integrated voice and messaging platform that finally brings Nintendo’s online functionality closer to its competitors.
Global Momentum
In markets like the U.S., Europe, Japan, and Australia, the console has seen unprecedented demand. In Australia, the base Switch 2 is priced at AUD $699, while the Mario Kart World bundle is going for AUD $799. Despite concerns over rising game prices—such as Mario Kart World retailing for €90 in Spain—consumers have shown that excitement for Nintendo’s next generation is more than enough to overcome sticker shock.
For now, though, the message is clear: the Nintendo Switch 2 is here, and it’s already rewriting the rules.
