Don’t Expect a Sonic Adventure Remake Anytime Soon, Says Sonic Team Head

“It would be just as much effort as making a brand-new game,” Iizuka says.

Fans holding out hope for a remake of Sonic Adventure or its sequel may want to temper their expectations. In a recent interview with Shacknews, Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka confirmed there are currently no plans to revisit or remake the beloved Dreamcast-era titles.

Despite long-running speculation and occasional teases over the years, Iizuka clarified that while he still holds the Sonic Adventure series close to his heart, modernizing those games would take the same time and resources as developing an entirely new Sonic title. As such, Sonic Team is opting to focus its efforts on original content instead of looking back.

“To remake Sonic Adventure or Sonic Adventure 2 would mean rebuilding everything to meet today’s standards,” Iizuka explained. “It’s not something we can do lightly.”

This comment may disappoint fans who have long dreamed of seeing the 1998 and 2001 titles polished for modern hardware, complete with updated graphics, controls, and possibly refined storytelling. Though both Sonic Adventure games were re-released on multiple platforms over the years, including the GameCube, Xbox 360, and PC, they’ve never received a full remake treatment akin to what we’ve seen with other classic franchises like Final Fantasy or Resident Evil.

No Sonic Adventure 3 Either

Iizuka also addressed questions about Sonic Adventure 3, a hypothetical sequel that’s become something of a white whale among fans. He acknowledged the community’s passion for the series but emphasized that there’s no development underway for a new entry.

“I understand the desire, and I appreciate the support,” he said, “but right now, we are focused on creating new Sonic experiences for the current generation of players.”

Sonic Team Is Looking Forward

Rather than remakes, Sonic Team is directing its energy toward upcoming projects. The team is currently working on Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, a new arcade-style racer set to launch on September 25, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The title promises fast-paced multiplayer competition and a narrative-driven campaign, aiming to expand the Sonic universe in a fresh direction.

In the meantime, fans can look back on recent Sonic titles that have successfully blended nostalgia with innovation. Sonic Frontiers (2022) brought open-zone exploration to the series for the first time, Sonic Superstars (2023) delivered a cooperative 2D platformer in the classic style, and Sonic x Shadow Generations (2024) offered a reimagining of the Sonic Generations experience with added Shadow-focused content.

The Legacy Lives On – Just Not in Remake Form

While it’s clear that Sonic Adventure and its sequel won’t be remade anytime soon, their influence still resonates. The games helped transition Sonic from 2D to 3D, introduced fan-favourite characters like Big the Cat and Rouge the Bat, and featured some of the most iconic music in the franchise’s history.

For now, Iizuka and the Sonic Team are committed to building new memories rather than retelling old ones. Whether or not the Adventure series ever gets a second chance in the spotlight, it’s clear that its legacy still fuels the franchise today.
