A new Call of Juarez game is reportedly in development at Techland, according to reliable industry insider Tom Henderson via Insider Gaming. This would mark the first entry in the cult-favourite Western shooter franchise since 2013’s Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, and it’s said to be built from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5.
The news has sparked excitement among longtime fans of the series, which blends gritty Old West shootouts with memorable storytelling and sharp gunplay. Techland, best known today for its Dying Light zombie parkour franchise, appears to be returning to its roots with this revival.
A Return to the Wild West
The original Call of Juarez debuted in 2006, followed by several sequels including Bound in Blood and the critically acclaimed Gunslinger. The latter, with its cel-shaded art style and unreliable narrator gimmick, remains a standout for many players even today.
While Ubisoft originally published the earlier games, Techland regained the rights to the franchise in 2018. Since then, fans have speculated whether the studio might one day return to the lawless frontiers of the American West.
According to Henderson, the new project has been in development for some time and is not a recent addition to Techland’s pipeline. Details on the game’s setting, story, or gameplay features remain under wraps, but the move to Unreal Engine 5 suggests a major technical leap forward compared to past entries.
What’s Going On at Techland?
This revelation comes as Techland undergoes a notable internal shift. Recent reports claim that the studio has scrapped at least two unannounced projects, including a Star Wars-inspired fantasy RPG codenamed Project Cornerstone. The team has instead refocused on key franchises Dying Light, and now, seemingly, Call of Juarez.
Notably, Techland has not yet confirmed Henderson’s report, only stating that they “will talk about all the news in due time.” However, with multiple reputable outlets including PSU, VideoGamer, and GamingBolt now echoing the news, it appears that an official reveal may not be far off.
Why It Matters
The return of Call of Juarez could offer something refreshingly different in today’s crowded shooter market. While franchises like Call of Duty and Battlefield continue to dominate with modern or near-future settings, the Old West remains an underutilized but beloved backdrop offering stylish gunfights, outlaw drama, and moral ambiguity.
If Techland can channel what made Gunslinger so special, while modernizing it with current-gen tools and storytelling sensibilities, the new Call of Juarez could be one of the most exciting comebacks in recent gaming history.
Stay tuned to 1-UP Games for updates as this story develops. And if you haven’t played Gunslinger recently, maybe it’s time to dust off those revolvers something big might be riding into town very soon.
