The days of Final Fantasy being a PlayStation exclusive may soon be over. In a recent interview with Game Informer, Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki Yoshida indicated that the future of the long-running RPG series is headed toward multiplatform releases, signaling a major shift in Square Enix’s strategy.
“We want as many people as possible to be able to play Final Fantasy,” Yoshida explained. “Exclusivity has its place, but going forward, we’re looking at how to make our games more accessible across different platforms.”
This statement arrives at a time when the industry is increasingly focused on reaching broader audiences. With ballooning development costs and heightened competition, platform exclusivity especially for third-party developers is becoming less appealing. Yoshida’s comments strongly suggest that Square Enix is rethinking how it approaches major releases like Final Fantasy XVII and future remakes or spin-offs.
Historically, Final Fantasy has had a strong relationship with PlayStation. After its early days on Nintendo consoles, the series made a high-profile move to Sony with Final Fantasy VII in 1997 a defining moment that helped cement the PlayStation brand. Since then, mainline entries like Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy XII, and Final Fantasy XV all launched first on PlayStation hardware, with others following suit.
However, this generation has seen the tide shift. While Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy XVI were timed exclusives for PS4 and PS5 respectively, both titles have seen or are expected to see PC releases. Meanwhile, Square Enix’s Western titles and some of its legacy content have begun appearing on Xbox and Nintendo Switch, further suggesting a desire to diversify beyond PlayStation.
Earlier this year, Square Enix confirmed a renewed focus on multiplatform development in its midterm business plan. The company cited the need for global reach and stronger sales performance across all regions. Yoshida’s recent comments now reinforce that strategy on a franchise level, marking what could be a new era for Final Fantasy.
While it’s still unclear what platforms Final Fantasy XVII will launch on or when it will be officially revealed fans can expect Square Enix to prioritize accessibility and reach. Whether it’s PC, Xbox, or even the upcoming Nintendo Switch successor, the future of Final Fantasy appears to be platform-agnostic.
For long-time PlayStation fans, this may mark the end of an era. But for the franchise itself, it could be a chance to usher in a new golden age one where Final Fantasy is no longer tied to a single console, but open to all players, everywhere.
