Elden Ring: Nightreign‘s long-awaited two-player mode is officially launching on July 30th.
Yes, it’s real. And it’s happening in just a few days.
The update marks a major evolution in how Elden Ring is played. For the first time, players will be able to team up and explore the game’s vast, brutal world in true co-op no gimmicks, no fleeting summon signs, no mid-battle disconnects. Just you, a friend, and the Lands Between.
At the core of this new feature is a fully integrated 2-player story mode, built from the ground up for shared progression. That means both players will earn runes, complete quests, and experience the world in real-time together. No one gets left behind. Both see the same world events unfold. Both fight the same bosses. Both ride Torrent.
According to FromSoftware, this isn’t just patched-in multiplayer it’s been “designed as a foundational experience” for Nightreign. That phrasing is important. It suggests co-op is more than a convenience; it’s central to what this new chapter is about.
Built for Two
The studio says players can join up from the start, customize loadouts with synergy in mind, and even face newly rebalanced enemies meant to challenge coordinated duos. That includes new dungeon encounters, field bosses with multi-phase AI tuned for two-player aggression, and even cooperative puzzle mechanics something Elden Ring hasn’t experimented with until now.
There’s also a brand-new gesture-based ping system, refined voice chat integration, and seamless world navigation between players. Whether you’re scaling cliffs in the Weeping Peninsula or storming castles in the shadow of the Erdtree, it’s all accessible as a team.
What About PvP?
Interestingly, Fromsoft has confirmed that PvP won’t be available during 2-player story runs. According to the developers, this was a “deliberate choice” to ensure immersion and avoid griefing during key progression moments. However, standard PvP and invasion mechanics will remain in other modes.
When Can You Play?
The 2-player mode update goes live globally on July 30th, with preloading available the night before on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. It’s a free update for all current owners of Elden Ring, though certain features will require the upcoming Nightreign expansion, which launches later this year.
Whether you’re returning for a fresh run or diving in for the first time, this is the moment many have been waiting for. The Tarnished don’t have to walk alone anymore.
