Ubisoft recently made the quiet decision to cancel a sequel to Star Wars Outlaws before it even got off the ground. According to industry insider Tom Henderson, the follow-up game was scrapped in the very early stages of development, well before the project could gain momentum or significant investment.
Star Wars Outlaws, released in August 2024, didn’t quite meet Ubisoft’s lofty expectations. While it managed to move about one million copies in its opening month a decent figure by many standards it fell short of the company’s internal targets. The game received generally positive reviews, earning a solid average score on sites like OpenCritic, but that critical acclaim didn’t fully translate into strong, lasting player engagement or sales.
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has publicly suggested that the Star Wars brand itself might be facing a rough patch, describing it as navigating “choppy waters.” While that’s certainly one factor, many fans and critics think the game’s shortcomings in gameplay depth and marketing efforts played a bigger role in its underwhelming performance.
Despite the sequel’s cancellation, Ubisoft remains committed to supporting the original Outlaws game. Recent patches have improved combat and stealth mechanics, and the game is even slated for release on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, which could introduce it to a new wave of players.
In a way, Ubisoft’s move is a reminder of how unpredictable the gaming market can be—even when dealing with a major franchise like Star Wars. The sequel’s early demise shows that big-name licenses don’t guarantee success, and publishers have to be ready to pivot quickly when things don’t pan out.
For now, fans of Star Wars Outlaws will have to make do with the existing experience and hope that Ubisoft’s continued support breathes new life into the game. Whether a sequel ever returns to the table remains to be seen, but it’s clear Ubisoft is cautious about investing heavily until there’s a stronger signal from the market.
