Kirby Air Riders Takes Flight This November

Very Excited

Nintendo has finally lifted the lid on Kirby Air Riders, confirming that the long-awaited racer will launch worldwide on November 20, 2025, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2. The announcement closed out a 45-minute Nintendo Direct presentation earlier this week, with none other than Masahiro Sakurai himself taking the stage to introduce the project.

For long-time fans, the reveal carried more weight than a typical release date drop. Sakurai hasn’t directed a Kirby game since 2003’s Kirby Air Ride on the GameCube, a title that gained cult status over the years despite a mixed reception at launch. Its City Trial mode in particular developed a reputation as one of Nintendo’s most inventive multiplayer experiences. With Sakurai returning, expectations are high that Air Riders will recapture that same spark while building on it for a modern audience.

What’s New in Air Riders

From what was shown during the Direct, Kirby Air Riders isn’t just a nostalgic revival. The game boasts a much wider character roster, with familiar faces like King Dedede and Waddle Dee joined by deeper cuts such as Knuckle Joe. Players can take to the skies on a range of customizable machines, mixing speed and handling in ways that should keep the racing fresh.

Multiplayer is clearly a major focus. Up to eight players locally or sixteen online can jump into races, battles, or the expanded City Trial mode. In City Trial, competitors explore an open map, collecting power-ups and sabotaging rivals before taking on a final event. It’s a format that stood out in the GameCube era, and now looks primed to shine with online functionality and the Switch 2’s improved hardware.

A Return Worth Waiting For

For Kirby fans, November can’t come soon enough. The pink puffball has starred in plenty of platformers over the last decade, but seeing him front a large-scale, multiplayer-driven racer feels refreshing. And with Sakurai steering the ship, there’s a sense that Air Riders could finally give the Air Ride formula the recognition it deserved all along.
