Two years after its release, Assassin’s Creed Mirage is unexpectedly stepping back into the spotlight. Ubisoft has confirmed that the game will receive a brand-new story expansion in 2025, and perhaps the most surprising detail of all is that it will be completely free for players who already own the game.
This marks a significant shift from the studio’s earlier stance. When Mirage launched in 2023, Ubisoft stated that the project was a smaller, self-contained experience, meant as a love letter to the original Assassin’s Creed. Creative director Stéphane Boudon even went on record in 2024 saying that no post-launch DLC was planned. That’s why fans were caught off guard by the announcement of new story content nearly two years later.
A Journey Beyond Baghdad
The upcoming expansion takes protagonist Basim Ibn Ishaq out of Baghdad and into the historic region of AlUla, in what is now Saudi Arabia. Known for its ancient sandstone formations, hidden tombs, and centuries-old trade routes, AlUla provides fertile ground for new missions, side quests, and stealth opportunities. The setting also connects thematically to Mirage’s focus on history, culture, and the hidden world of assassins operating in the shadows.
While Ubisoft has not revealed the full scope of the story, early reports suggest that Basim will uncover new layers of intrigue tied to the Order of the Ancients. The content promises both narrative-driven quests and gameplay improvements for the base game, hinting at refinements to parkour, stealth tools, and perhaps even enemy AI.
Why Now?
The timing of this DLC is intriguing. A report earlier this year suggested that Ubisoft partnered with Savvy Games Group, the Saudi-backed investment arm with growing influence in the gaming industry, to help bring the AlUla expansion to life. That deal may explain both the sudden change in Ubisoft’s DLC plans and the decision to make it free.
Whether viewed as a gesture of goodwill or as a strategic move to keep Mirage relevant while the spotlight shifts to Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the expansion undeniably breathes new life into a title that many considered wrapped up.
What Players Can Expect
- New Story Chapter: A continuation of Basim’s journey, set against the backdrop of AlUla.
- Fresh Missions & Challenges: Side quests that take advantage of the desert setting and historical ruins.
- Quality-of-Life Updates: Ubisoft has hinted at refinements to core gameplay systems.
- No Extra Cost: Available to all players who already own the base game.
Although Ubisoft hasn’t shared an exact release date, the free DLC is expected to launch in late 2025. That gives players plenty of time to revisit Mirage’s Baghdad before venturing into its new desert frontier.
For fans of the franchise, this expansion is more than a pleasant surprise it’s a chance to spend more time with Basim, a character who continues to play a pivotal role in the overarching Assassin’s Creed saga. And in an era where paid expansions are the norm, a free story chapter feels almost nostalgic, a reminder of when studios occasionally rewarded players simply for sticking around.
