The surreal, painterly world of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 won’t stand alone. In a recent interview, director Guillaume Broche confirmed that the upcoming game is only the beginning of a much larger vision for what could become a lasting franchise.
Broche, who serves as creative director at Sandfall Interactive, explained that Expedition 33 represents “just one story we want to tell in this universe.” The team, based in Montpellier, France, has already been drawing attention for the strikingly artistic approach to RPG design, blending turn-based combat with rich storytelling in an oil-painting-inspired world.
“Clair Obscur is the franchise name. Expedition 33 is one of the stories that we want to tell in this franchise,” director Guillaume Broche told MrMattyPlays
“Exactly what it will look like and what the concept will be is still too soon to announce, but what is sure is that this is not the end of the Clair Obscur franchise.”
But Broche emphasized that Sandfall’s ambitions go beyond a single release. The “Clair Obscur” name itself signals a wider vision, one where multiple narratives, timelines, and perhaps even genres could emerge under the same artistic banner.
For now, Sandfall remains focused on Expedition 33 but fans of its breathtaking debut can rest assured that this is just the beginning of something larger.
