Recent datamines have raised fresh questions about how Marvel Rivals might handle its long-term monetisation. According to information uncovered in the game’s files, references to a feature codenamed “Mysteries” suggest that a loot box-style system could be on the way.
Players digging through Season 4 data found multiple strings of text linked to “mystery” mechanics. These include terms like “cosmic mysteries number” and “BOX_OPEN_HISTORY_CHANGE”, which appear to describe tracking the opening of randomised rewards. While NetEase has not made any official announcements, the language strongly resembles systems used for loot boxes in other games.
At this stage, it isn’t clear whether these “Mysteries” would require real-money purchases or whether they would be handed out through gameplay challenges, battle passes, or seasonal events. Some fans have pointed out that earlier leaks about lottery-style features were eventually abandoned, so it’s possible the references are leftover code that will never see the light of day.
The community response has been mixed. On social channels, some players worry about the return of controversial monetisation tactics, pointing to years of debate around loot boxes in titles like Overwatch and FIFA. Others are less concerned, arguing that if the system sticks to cosmetic rewards and is generous with free unlocks, it could add variety without hurting the experience.
Legal considerations could also play a role. Several countries have tightened restrictions around loot boxes, treating them similarly to gambling mechanics. Australia, where discussions about regulating these systems have been ongoing, is one market NetEase would need to tread carefully in.
For now, the existence of “Mysteries” is little more than speculation fuelled by datamining. But with Marvel Rivals continuing to expand and evolve, how the developers choose to handle monetisation may prove just as important as new characters or maps. Until the studio offers clarity, players will be left to wonder whether they’re in for a fair cosmetic bonus or a system that risks dividing the community.
