Gearbox Software has confirmed that Borderlands 4 will not be arriving on Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2 platform as planned. In a statement released earlier today, the developer announced that the port has been delayed indefinitely, citing the need for more development time and feature alignment with other versions of the game.
The move comes as a blow to fans who had already secured their copies through pre-orders. Gearbox clarified that all digital pre-orders placed via the Nintendo eShop will be automatically cancelled and refunded. For those who reserved physical editions, the company is advising customers to reach out to their chosen retailer to confirm cancellation and refund procedures.
The Switch 2 version was initially expected to launch alongside the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC releases later this year. However, internal testing reportedly revealed performance concerns, and the team decided to hold back the port rather than risk shipping an unfinished product. Gearbox also noted that the delay allows them to implement cross-save functionality, something the studio has been aiming to deliver across all platforms.
At present, no revised release window has been given. Gearbox’s official message described the postponement as “indefinite,” leaving players uncertain whether the Switch 2 version will arrive in months or slip into 2026.
For now, fans who had hoped to take the loot-shooter on the go will need to wait for further updates. In the meantime, the studio is pushing forward with post-launch content and patches for other platforms, ensuring that those players won’t be short on new missions and gear while the Switch 2 version remains in limbo.
This isn’t the first time a major third-party title has run into trouble on Nintendo hardware, but it’s a reminder of the challenges involved in bringing demanding modern games to a hybrid console. For Gearbox, the decision may be frustrating in the short term, yet it signals a commitment to ensuring quality when Borderlands 4 finally does make its handheld debut.
