Nintendo fans have another early morning ahead of them. Masahiro Sakurai has announced a second Nintendo Direct dedicated entirely to Kirby Air Riders, scheduled for Thursday, October 23 at 6 AM PT. For Australian fans, that translates to:
- Sydney / Melbourne / Canberra / Hobart (AEDT): 11 PM October 23
- Brisbane (AEST): 10 PM October 23
- Adelaide (ACDT): 10:30 PM October 23
- Darwin (ACST): 8:30 PM October 23
- Perth (AWST): 7 PM October 23
The presentation is confirmed to run for a full 60 minutes, matching the length of some of Nintendo’s biggest showcases in recent years.
This marks the second time Sakurai has hosted a Direct focused on the new Kirby racer, following the surprise announcement earlier this year that the long-rumoured project was real. While Nintendo’s official channels are promoting the broadcast, Sakurai himself is once again taking centre stage, reportedly presenting new gameplay footage, in-depth developer commentary, and several yet-unseen game modes.
Kirby Air Riders has been described by insiders as “Sakurai’s dream project” a spiritual successor to Kirby Air Ride for the GameCube, reimagined for modern hardware and online play. Unlike its 2003 predecessor, this new entry blends high-speed competitive racing with Kirby’s trademark power-copying abilities, allowing players to inhale rival abilities mid-race and turn the tide with creative strategies.
Recent previews have hinted that Sakurai’s presentation will focus on the game’s expanded city trial mode, a feature that has gained near-mythical status among fans. The segment is expected to highlight how players can explore large, open arenas, collect upgrades, and then clash in a final challenge whether it’s a race, a battle, or something entirely new.
Sakurai’s passion for detail has been evident throughout the game’s development updates. In past interviews, he spoke about wanting to build a racing experience that feels “alive,” where every interaction, collision, and item pickup carries weight and intention.
Nintendo has also confirmed that Kirby Air Riders is coming to Switch 2 this November, priced at $70 USD. Early footage has drawn comparisons to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, but Sakurai has made it clear that Air Riders isn’t chasing the same crowd. “It’s not just about crossing the finish line first,” he explained in a past teaser. “It’s about freedom how you race, how you fly, and how you find your own path.”
Fans can tune in to the upcoming Direct via Nintendo’s official YouTube and Twitch channels. Given Sakurai’s reputation for delivering surprises, expectations are high that the presentation might include a few unexpected reveals possibly even a demo announcement.
No matter what’s shown, the excitement around Kirby Air Riders continues to grow. With Sakurai personally leading the charge, this upcoming Direct feels less like a marketing event and more like a celebration of one of gaming’s most creative minds returning to his roots.
