Pokémon TCG Pocket Breaks Records, Earning $1.3 Billion in Its First Year

WOW

In a year full of strong mobile releases, few could have predicted that Pokémon TCG Pocket would rise this high, this fast. According to new data from analytics firm AppMagic, the mobile card battler has pulled in nearly $1.3 billion USD in its first twelve months outperforming even Pokémon GO’s legendary debut year.

The game, a collaboration between The Pokémon Company, Creatures Inc., and DeNA, launched on October 30, 2024. Within days, it was topping download charts across iOS and Android. But the scale of its success has only now come into full view.

AppMagic’s estimates show that Pokémon TCG Pocket generated roughly $229 million in November 2024 alone, setting a blistering pace that never really slowed. Over the following months, regular content drops, special events, and new expansion sets helped maintain engagement across its 150 million-plus player base.

A Different Kind of Pokémon Craze

Unlike Pokémon GO, which relied on exploration and AR gimmicks, TCG Pocket brings the thrill of collecting and battling into a more traditional digital space. Players can open packs, build decks, and challenge others through online matches all from their phones. It sounds simple, but the formula hits a sweet spot between nostalgia and accessibility.

In its first year, players reportedly completed over 2 billion battles and created 490 million showcase galleries, a feature that lets users share and compare their favourite card collections. Those numbers underscore how social this experience has become, even without the physical element that defines the real-world TCG.

The Money Behind the Cards

The free-to-play model has proven wildly effective. In-app purchases, premium pass tiers, and rotating booster events drive much of the spending, while frequent collaboration drops themed sets based on popular Pokémon generations have kept whales and casual fans alike coming back.

It’s worth noting, though, that these revenue figures come from third-party analytics, not official Pokémon Company financial reports. Still, even if the estimates are off by a margin, they paint a picture of an enormous hit one that’s already eclipsed Pokémon GO’s first-year total of around $1 billion.

The success of Pokémon TCG Pocket raises bigger questions for both The Pokémon Company and the wider mobile industry. Can digital card games really sustain this level of attention long-term? And will this newfound digital dominance impact sales or demand for the physical trading cards?

For now, the signs are overwhelmingly positive. The game’s first-anniversary celebration drew millions of players, with limited-time promotions causing short server delays across multiple regions a problem most developers would envy.

A Record Worth Remembering

If the projections hold, Pokémon TCG Pocket will go down as one of the most financially successful first years in mobile gaming history. That’s not just a Pokémon story; it’s a reminder that the trading-card genre still has room to evolve and that nostalgia, when combined with smart design, can still move mountains.

After nearly three decades of trading, battling, and collecting, Pokémon has once again proven that it can reinvent itself and make a billion dollars doing it.
