After months of quiet from WayForward, the studio has finally confirmed what fans have been waiting to hear: a new Shantae game is officially in development. The announcement came during Limited Run Games’ LRG3 2025 showcase, where series director Matt Bozon appeared briefly to reveal that Shantae 7 the working title for the next mainline entry is now underway.
There’s no subtitle, no trailer, and no release window just yet. But for longtime fans of the half-genie hero, that simple confirmation was enough to set social media ablaze.
“We’re currently hard at work on a brand-new, seventh entry in the Shantae series,” Bozon said during the broadcast, smiling in that way that suggests the team has plenty of surprises up their sleeves.
A Fresh Look for Familiar Faces
Alongside the announcement, WayForward shared a single piece of key art a colourful shot of Shantae and her arch-nemesis Risky Boots, both sporting subtle design updates. Shantae’s hair appears slightly shorter and more stylized, and her outfit features a few new details, hinting at a small but noticeable evolution in the art direction.
It’s unclear whether the new entry will follow the hand-drawn 2D animation of Shantae and the Seven Sirens or move toward something new entirely. WayForward has always treated each installment as a chance to experiment, and Bozon has previously mentioned wanting to push Shantae’s animation even further.
What Comes Next
Bozon and his team haven’t said which platforms the new game will target, but it’s safe to assume it’ll land on Switch, PC, and PlayStation, with a possible next-gen version in tow. WayForward has a strong relationship with Nintendo, so a Switch-first release seems likely.
If history is any indication, the studio will take its time. Every Shantae game has been carefully crafted, packed with charm, humor, and a sense of warmth that few other series can replicate. Whether you’ve been following the half-genie since 2002 or you just discovered her on Switch, Shantae 7 feels like the start of something fresh maybe even a reinvention.
Until more is revealed, all fans can do is speculate and dream. But one thing’s for certain: when Shantae finally takes the stage again, she’ll dance her way straight into the spotlight.
