Magic: The Gathering Designer Says He’d Love a Crossover with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Magic: The Gathering is no stranger to unusual collaborations these days, but one potential crossover has come from a source fans might not have expected. Speaking with Dexerto, the game’s principal designer Gavin Verhey admitted he’d love to see a team-up with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 one of the more stylish and talked-about RPGs on the horizon.

“It would be really fun to do,” Verhey told the outlet, before tempering expectations with a quick reality check. “Who knows if it’ll happen or if they’re even up for that kind of thing.”

The idea isn’t totally out of left field. Magic has been leaning heavily into cross-brand sets through its Universes Beyond line, bringing in everything from Fallout to The Lord of the Rings and even Assassin’s Creed. Fans have warmed to the concept, even if some of the purists still side-eye the more modern additions.

What makes Expedition 33 interesting in this context is its visual identity the painterly, dreamlike look of its world already resembles card art you might expect to see on a rare mythic in a core set. Its combat system, meanwhile, revolves around timing and counterplay, something that could translate surprisingly well into bespoke mechanics if Wizards ever decided to take the plunge.

For now, Verhey’s comments are just that: a designer spit balling about a franchise that caught his eye. But the fact that he even mentioned it will be enough to kick off speculation across social media. After all, Wizards of the Coast has shown repeatedly that it isn’t afraid to chase a crossover when the stars align.

Whether Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 becomes the next Universe Beyond entry is anyone’s guess. But with the game gaining attention and Magic always hungry for stylish worlds to tap into, it’s probably not the last time we’ll hear someone float the idea.
