Where is the Handheld

A new claim suggests Sony isn’t done with the PlayStation Portal just yet. According to fresh chatter from reliable hardware insider circles, an OLED version of the PlayStation Portal is reportedly in development and could arrive sometime in 2026.

The information comes from KeplerL2 on NeoGAF, a source known for sharing low-level technical details about PlayStation hardware. While discussing Sony’s wider handheld ambitions including ongoing leaks surrounding a future PlayStation 6 portable Kepler briefly touched on the existing Portal and suggested that Sony is already preparing a revised model.

According to the post, the current PlayStation Portal has “seemingly been a success,” prompting Sony to work on “another version this year.” When pressed for clarification, Kepler followed up with a simple response: “OLED version.”

If accurate, it would mark the first major hardware revision for the Portal since its launch. Sony has already shown a willingness to expand the device’s role beyond basic Remote Play. Last year, the Portal quietly received a substantial cloud-streaming update in select regions, allowing PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers to stream select PS5 titles directly to the device without needing a console connection.

That library includes major releases such as Astro Bot, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Cyberpunk 2077, God of War Ragnarök, Resident Evil 4, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, Hogwarts Legacy, GTA V, Fortnite, and more. The update significantly reshaped how the Portal is used and helped reframe it as a more standalone-friendly handheld.

An OLED screen would only strengthen that appeal, especially for players who value image quality and contrast in handheld gaming. It would also mirror Sony’s past strategy with the PlayStation Vita and Nintendo’s own mid-generation Switch OLED refresh.

That said, there’s no official confirmation from Sony, and no timeframe beyond broad claims. Until PlayStation says something publicly, this should be treated as rumor rather than fact.

Still, if the Portal continues to gain traction and Sony is serious about expanding its handheld ecosystem, an OLED model feels less like a stretch and more like a logical next step.
