In a move that feels equal parts nostalgic and strategic, Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen have appeared in the “Coming Soon” section of the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch.
Both titles are now available to pre-order ahead of their February 27 launch, priced at $19.99 USD each.
In Australia, Nintendo’s eShop tends to price games based on regional digital pricing tiers titles listed at USD 19.99 overseas often convert to a rough Australian eShop price of around A$28-A$30 once local pricing steps and GST are applied (based on typical Australian eShop pricing structures where $24.95 games sit around A$30 or less).

A Classic Return to Kanto
Originally released in 2004 for the Game Boy Advance, FireRed and LeafGreen were full remakes of Pokémon Red and Blue, rebuilding the Kanto adventure with updated visuals, wireless trading support, and expanded post-game content like the Sevii Islands.
Now, over two decades later, the pair are making their way to Switch in what appears to be a faithful reproduction of their original GBA forms.
According to the official eShop listing:
“Because this version replicates the way the game was originally released, each language version is separate and there are no in-game options to change the language.”
That means players will need to purchase the specific regional language version they want to play, as there won’t be an in-game toggle to switch between languages.
Preserving the Original Experience
The wording suggests these are straight emulated or preserved versions rather than modernized remasters. For longtime fans, that likely means:
- The original pixel-art presentation
- Classic battle interface
- Traditional mechanics from the Gen III era
- No modern quality-of-life updates
In other words, this looks to be about authenticity over overhaul.
That approach will likely appeal to players who want to relive the early-2000s Pokémon experience exactly as it was complete with its quirks.
For players who grew up with the Game Boy Advance era, this marks the first time FireRed and LeafGreen will be playable on a modern Nintendo system without original hardware.
For newer fans, it offers a chance to experience one of the franchise’s most celebrated remakes the version that reintroduced Kanto to an entire generation.
There’s been no indication of additional enhancements, connectivity features, or compatibility with newer Pokémon titles. As of now, the listing points to a straightforward recreation of the original releases.
More details will likely emerge closer to launch, but for now, Kanto is officially coming back to Switch on February 27 and it’s doing so the old-school way.
