Bandai Namco has officially unveiled the next entry in its long-running anime RPG series, Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad, and it won’t be long before players can jump in. The new title is currently scheduled to launch this July.
Interestingly, the exact date appears to vary slightly depending on the trailer. The Japanese announcement trailer lists July 9, while the English version published on PlayStation’s YouTube channel points to July 10 as the release date.
The reveal follows Bandai Namco’s earlier tease that it would announce its next RPG project on March 5, which ultimately turned out to be the next evolution of the Sword Art Online game lineup. The most recent game in the series, Sword Art Online: Fractured Daydream, launched in 2024.
A First for the Series: Your Own Protagonist
One of the biggest changes coming with Echoes of Aincrad is how players experience the story.
For the first time in the history of the Sword Art Online games, the protagonist will not be a predefined character like Kirito. Instead, players will create their own main character, shaping their appearance and identity before entering the game world.
According to an IGN preview, series producer Yosuke Futami explained that the decision was tied to the game’s narrative direction. Because Echoes of Aincrad features an original story, players won’t need any prior knowledge of the anime or manga to jump in.
The team also hopes that letting players build their own avatar will help them feel more personally connected to the adventure.
An MMO World Built for Solo Play
Despite being set inside an MMO-style environment, Echoes of Aincrad is designed primarily as a single-player RPG experience.
Players will assemble a party made up of AI-controlled allies, forming a team before venturing through the game’s world together. Futami described the goal as creating a structure where the game world feels more like a large interconnected dungeon, rather than a traditional open-world MMO.
While more details about gameplay and systems are still expected in the coming months, Echoes of Aincrad already looks set to push the Sword Art Online games in a slightly different direction especially with its new focus on player-created characters.
With its July release window approaching, it likely won’t be long before Bandai Namco shares additional gameplay details and a confirmed global launch date.
