Resident Evil 1 Remake Reportedly in Development at Capcom, But Don’t Expect It Anytime Soon

Does it need a remake?

A new report claims that Capcom may already be working on another remake of the original Resident Evil, though fans likely shouldn’t expect to see it for several years.

The rumour comes from well-known industry insider Dusk Golem, who has a long track record of reporting information related to Capcom projects particularly those tied to the Resident Evil franchise.

A Classic That Started It All

Originally released in 1996, Resident Evil is widely credited with helping define the survival horror genre. The game introduced players to the infamous Spencer Mansion, puzzle-heavy exploration, and the slow-burn tension that would go on to shape the series for decades.

The title already received a major overhaul once before. In 2002, Resident Evil launched for the Nintendo GameCube, dramatically upgrading the visuals, expanding the story, and adding new areas and mechanics. Despite its age, that version is still considered one of the best video game remakes ever made.

But more than two decades later, rumors suggest Capcom may be revisiting the game yet again.

Leak Claims the Project Is in Early Development

According to comments shared by Dusk Golem online, full production on a new remake of the original Resident Evil has recently begun. However, the project is reportedly still very early in development.

In the same discussion, the leaker suggested the timeline could be extremely long, saying the game may be anywhere from four to seven years away if it ultimately makes it to release.

They also cautioned that projects within the franchise are sometimes cancelled during development, meaning the remake isn’t guaranteed to see the light of day.

Capcom’s Ongoing Remake Strategy

The rumour doesn’t come entirely out of nowhere. Capcom has spent the last several years balancing brand-new entries with remakes of classic titles in the series.

Games like Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 4 all proved to be massive commercial and critical successes. Collectively, the franchise has now sold close to 200 million copies worldwide, making it one of Capcom’s biggest and most reliable properties.

There have also been ongoing rumors that Resident Evil Code: Veronica could be next in line for the remake treatment.

Why a New Remake Makes Sense

If Capcom truly is revisiting the first game again, it would likely be rebuilt using the company’s modern RE Engine, the same technology behind recent entries in the series.

That engine has already proven capable of delivering detailed environments, realistic lighting, and far more dynamic enemy encounters than the fixed-camera style used in earlier versions of the game.

Still, with the project reportedly years away from completion, fans shouldn’t expect an official announcement anytime soon.

For now, the rumour remains exactly that an unconfirmed report. But if Capcom does decide to revisit the Spencer Mansion once again, it could mark the franchise returning to the place where survival horror first began.
