Electronic Arts has reportedly laid off an unknown number of employees working across multiple Battlefield development teams as part of what the company is calling a broader internal “realignment.”

According to reports, the layoffs have affected staff across several studios involved in the franchise, including Criterion Games, DICE, Ripple Effect Studios, and Motive Studio.

While employees at these studios have been informed of the layoffs, the exact number of affected staff and the specific roles impacted have not yet been publicly disclosed. All four studios are expected to remain operational.

Battlefield Teams Undergoing “Realignment”

Sources say the layoffs are part of an internal restructuring across teams working on Battlefield 6, which continues to receive live-service support following its launch.

The realignment reportedly spans multiple departments and offices tied to the Battlefield development pipeline. Despite the layoffs, development and ongoing support for the game will continue.

Electronic Arts has not yet publicly confirmed how many workers were impacted or the precise reasons behind the restructuring.

Battlefield 6 Facing Post-Launch Challenges

The layoffs arrive during a period of mixed momentum for Battlefield 6. While the game launched with strong interest, its reception in the months following release has become more complicated.

On Steam, the game initially held a “Mostly Positive” user rating, but that has since slipped to “Mixed.” Community criticism has focused on several issues, including:

  • Concerns about heavy monetization
  • The use of generative AI in cosmetic items
  • A perceived lack of new content updates
  • Gameplay changes affecting movement and balance

The backlash was significant enough that the developers delayed the start of Season 2 to give the team more time to address community feedback. A three-month roadmap outlining future updates has since been shared with players.

Player Numbers Have Fallen Since Launch

Player activity on Steam has also dropped notably since launch.

Battlefield 6 reached a peak of 747,440 concurrent players when it first released. In recent weeks, however, peak concurrent player counts have typically sat in the tens of thousands, with a recent daily peak of around 67,000 players.

While those numbers only represent activity on Steam and the game is also available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S they still provide a snapshot of the overall trend.

Meanwhile, the franchise’s free-to-play battle royale spinoff Battlefield: Redsec has also struggled with reception, currently holding “Mostly Negative” recent user reviews on the platform.

A Difficult Year for the Franchise

The layoffs also follow the tragic loss of Vince Zampella, who had been leading the Battlefield franchise before his death in a car accident earlier this year.

At the same time, Electronic Arts is currently in the process of being acquired by an investor group that includes Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners in a deal reportedly worth around $55 billion.

The acquisition has not yet closed and is expected to finalize during the first quarter of EA’s 2027 fiscal year. According to internal communications, the layoffs are said to be unrelated to the ongoing acquisition process.

For now, EA’s Battlefield teams remain active, but the restructuring highlights the continued turbulence surrounding one of the publisher’s biggest franchises.
