Falcom Announces ‘Dragon Slayer Project’ as 45th Anniversary Console Title

Falcom celebrates its 45th anniversary

Dragon Slyer Project

Developer Nihon Falcom has announced Dragon Slayer Project, a new console title currently in development as part of the company’s 45th anniversary celebrations.

Details about the project remain scarce for now. Falcom has not yet revealed the game’s genre, supported platforms, or a potential release window, and the title itself appears to be a working name for the project.

Despite the lack of specifics, the announcement immediately caught the attention of longtime fans due to its connection to one of Falcom’s most influential franchises.

A Legacy That Started in 1984

The Dragon Slayer series first began with the release of the original Dragon Slayer for the PC-8801 in 1984.

At the time, Falcom described the game as a “new-type, real-type role-playing game.” It stood out thanks to its unusual mechanics for the era, including a combat system where players attacked enemies simply by ramming into them, rather than using traditional command menus.

The game also featured early forms of progression systems that would later become staples in RPGs, such as collecting experience points, bringing items back to town to strengthen characters, and solving puzzles that required specific magic or equipment.

Those ideas helped the game earn praise from PC users at the time, and it is now widely considered one of the early foundations of the action RPG genre.

A Series That Spawned Multiple Classics

Following the original game’s success, Falcom expanded the franchise with several titles released under the Dragon Slayer banner.

Among the most notable entries were:

  • Xanadu
  • Romancia
  • Legacy of the Wizard
  • Sorcerian

Each installment experimented with different gameplay ideas, helping shape the identity of Falcom’s RPG catalog throughout the late 1980s and beyond.

The Birth of The Legend of Heroes

One of the most significant entries in the franchise arrived with the sixth title, Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes.

Unlike earlier action-focused entries, this game adopted a command-based battle system and placed greater emphasis on narrative elements such as characters, world-building, and story progression.

That shift eventually led to the creation of the The Legend of Heroes franchise, which later expanded into the long-running Trails storyline that began with The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky.

While Falcom has yet to explain how Dragon Slayer Project will connect to the original series, the announcement suggests the developer may be revisiting one of its oldest franchises for a modern console audience.

For now, fans will have to wait for further updates as Falcom gradually reveals more details about the project and its role in celebrating the company’s 45-year history.
