Starfield Lands on PS5 April 8 With Major Free Update and New Story Expansion

Very Exciting

Starfield

After months of speculation, Bethesda Game Studios has made it official Starfield is coming to PlayStation 5 on April 8, bringing with it a substantial wave of new content across all platforms.

The PS5 version won’t just be a straight port, either. Bethesda has confirmed full PS5 Pro support at launch, including both a Performance Mode and a Visual Mode designed to take advantage of the upgraded hardware. For PlayStation players who’ve been waiting on the sidelines, this is shaping up to be a more complete version of the game from day one.

But the bigger story might actually be what’s arriving alongside it.

Coinciding with the PS5 release is a massive free update referred to as the “Lanes Update” which introduces one of the most requested features since launch: the ability to seamlessly travel between planets within a star system. Instead of relying purely on fast travel, players will now be able to cruise through space, encounter dynamic events, and spend more time aboard their ship with their crew.

That shift alone changes the feel of exploration, but it’s only part of the update.

Bethesda is also adding a wide range of new content and systems. Players can expect new locations, including additional encounters, points of interest, and dungeons, with a clear focus on increasing environmental variety. There’s also a new resource X-Tech which can be used to upgrade weapons, ship modules, and more, potentially adding another layer to progression.

Combat is getting an overhaul as well. New enemy modifiers introduce tougher variations of existing foes, with traits like enhanced shielding, elemental damage, and more aggressive attack patterns. It’s a subtle change on paper, but one that could significantly impact how encounters play out.

On the exploration side, a new land vehicle called the Moon Jumper is being added, giving players more flexibility when traversing planetary surfaces. Meanwhile, outpost systems are getting meaningful upgrades, including cross-outpost storage and even a new companion-style addition in the form of a Milliewhale pet.

There’s also fresh crew content, with new recruitable characters like Muria and a mini-bot joining the roster, as well as improvements to the Starborn system most notably the ability to carry a limited number of items through the Unity into New Game Plus.

And then there’s the paid expansion.

The “Terran Armada” story DLC is launching alongside the update, bringing a full suite of new content: characters, locations, enemies, quests, systems, and rewards, all tied together by a new questline that spans multiple star systems. Players who own the Premium Edition will get access at no additional cost, while others will be able to purchase it separately.

Taken together, this feels less like a standard update cycle and more like a soft relaunch. Between the PS5 debut, sweeping gameplay additions, and a substantial story expansion, Starfield is entering its next phase in a big way one that could reshape how players experience Bethesda’s most ambitious RPG in years.
