A new system update for PlayStation 5 is rolling out, and while it’s not a massive overhaul, it does introduce a small but long-requested feature one that finally lets players properly show off their backgrounds.
When Sony introduced the Welcome Hub last year, it gave users a way to customize their console with different backgrounds. The catch was that you never really got to see them. The interface always sat on top, which meant those backgrounds were more of a subtle accent than something you could fully appreciate.
That changes with the newly added Showcase Mode.
With this update, the PS5 will now fade into a full-screen view of your selected background after the Welcome Hub sits idle for a short time. Whether you’re using static images or animated backgrounds, Showcase Mode essentially turns your console into a display piece something closer to a dynamic screensaver than a traditional UI element.
Alongside it, Sony has also introduced a Slideshow Mode. As the name suggests, this lets you cycle through multiple backgrounds or images, rotating them over time instead of sticking with a single static option. For players who’ve built up a collection of screenshots or themed visuals, it adds a bit more personality to the system.
Neither feature drastically changes how the PS5 functions day-to-day, but together they push the console a little further toward that balance between utility and presentation. It’s less about adding new functionality and more about making the system feel like it’s actually yours when you’re not actively playing something.
The update is currently rolling out gradually, so not everyone will see it immediately but once it lands, your PS5 might finally look as good idle as it does in motion.
