In what might be one of the strangest (and most on-brand) movie promotions in recent memory, Nintendo alongside Illumination, Universal Pictures, and Zinc Group has officially landed a Guinness World Records title for the world’s smallest popcorn container.
Yes, really.
The miniature collectible was created as part of the ongoing push for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and it’s exactly as ridiculous as it sounds in the best way possible. Designed to resemble Bowser’s tiny cauldron from the film, the container is a fully functional (if barely practical) popcorn holder.
The record was officially verified on March 17 at Universal Cinema AMC at Universal CityWalk Hollywood, where a Guinness adjudicator measured the container at just 2.6 inches (6.6 cm) at its widest point. Capacity-wise, it holds somewhere between five and eleven kernels of popcorn, which technically qualifies it as a legitimate popcorn vessel and now, a world-record holder.
It’s a deliberately playful piece of marketing, but one that ties directly into the film’s premise. The cauldron itself is a nod to a specific story beat involving Bowser, who, in the previous film, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, was shrunk down after consuming a blue star. That moment left him trapped in a miniature castle, and the new collectible leans fully into that imagery.
The tiny cauldron popcorn container will go on sale starting April 1 at select cinemas worldwide, including AMC Theatres in the United States, Vue Cinemas in Taiwan, and Golden Screen Cinemas in Malaysia.
Whether it ends up as a must-have collector’s item or just a clever novelty, it’s undeniably memorable and if nothing else, it’s proof that even something as small as a handful of popcorn kernels can be turned into a headline-grabbing moment.
