Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami is officially working on a new game through his studio UNBOUND, and it’s now backed by Shift Up, the developer behind Stellar Blade.
The announcement comes after Shift Up acquired UNBOUND, the Tokyo-based studio Mikami founded following his departure from Tango Gameworks. As part of the deal, Shift Up will also handle publishing for the studio’s future projects.
While no concrete details about the game have been revealed yet, Mikami confirmed he is actively involved in development and described the project as a “fairly large” new title. In the announcement, he also said the partnership would allow the team to focus more freely on creativity.
UNBOUND is currently developing original console and PC IP aimed at the global market, though genre, platforms, and release timing have not been confirmed.
For Mikami, the move marks the next major chapter in a career that helped define horror and action games, while for Shift Up, it’s a big swing at expanding beyond the success of Stellar Blade.
Right now, the biggest question is simple: what exactly is Shinji Mikami making?
And honestly, that alone is enough to get people paying attention.
