Black Myth: Zhong Kui Developer Plans to Avoid Generative AI for Game Design and Assets

Black Myth Zhong Ku

Game Science isn’t completely against AI, but the studio doesn’t appear interested in letting generative tools shape Black Myth: Zhong Kui.

Game Science is taking a cautious approach to generative AI during the development of Black Myth: Zhong Kui.

According to comments from Game Science co-founder and art director Yang Qi, the studio currently plans to avoid using AI-generated content for the game’s design and asset production. The comments came in response to a question on Weibo about how much modern AI technology could potentially speed up development on the studio’s next major action RPG.

Yang’s answer suggests that, while Game Science isn’t fundamentally opposed to AI technology, the team doesn’t see a reason to rush into using generative tools simply because they are becoming increasingly common. Instead, the studio appears committed to continuing with its existing development processes.

Black Myth: Zhong Kui Is Still Early in Development

Of course, fans shouldn’t expect Black Myth: Zhong Kui anytime soon.

Game Science has already confirmed that the project remains in the early stages of development, with no release date currently announced. Unlike Black Myth: Wukong, which drew heavily from the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, the studio’s next game will focus on Zhong Kui, a legendary figure from Chinese folklore often depicted as a powerful exorcist and vanquisher of evil spirits.

The game’s teaser suggested a significantly darker and more ominous direction, with themes centred around judgment and the supernatural. Beyond that, details remain limited.

Game Science has described Black Myth: Zhong Kui as a single-player action RPG planned for PC and other major platforms. Exactly which consoles those platforms include has yet to be confirmed.

For now, Game Science appears content to stick with the production techniques that helped turn Black Myth: Wukong into one of the industry’s biggest successes.

That approach could change as development progresses, but Yang Qi’s comments make one thing clear: the studio isn’t currently looking to use generative AI as a shortcut for designing Black Myth: Zhong Kui or creating its assets.

Whether that decision remains in place throughout development remains to be seen. For now, though, Game Science seems more interested in taking its time than racing to embrace the latest technology.

And with Black Myth: Zhong Kui still years away from release, the studio has plenty of time to decide exactly how much of a role AI should or shouldn’t play in its future.
