The Japanese publisher behind Story of Seasons and Rune Factory has reported a significant increase in operating profit despite declining overall revenue.
Japanese publisher Marvelous has reported an impressive 1,105% increase in operating profit for the first half of its financial year, driven largely by stronger-than-expected overseas game sales.
According to the company’s latest financial results, covering April through September 2026, operating profit climbed to approximately US$17.3 million, up from roughly US$1.4 million during the same period last year.
Despite the substantial profit increase, Marvelous reported a 30.7% decline in net sales, which fell to approximately US$89 million. Meanwhile, net profit attributable to the parent company reached around US$13.3 million.
Much of the improvement came from the company’s Digital Content division, which includes its video game operations. The division recorded approximately US$8.4 million in profit, recovering from a US$6.8 million loss during the previous year.
Marvelous attributed the turnaround to overseas game sales exceeding expectations, continued performance from existing releases and reduced development and research expenses.
However, the publisher also acknowledged that some development costs have shifted into the second half of the financial year, contributing to the stronger first-half results.
Among the titles highlighted were Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar and Moonlight Peaks, the supernatural farming and life simulation game developed by Little Chicken Game Company.
Marvelous USA recently confirmed that Moonlight Peaks has surpassed 300,000 copies sold worldwide since launching on July 7. The game is also scheduled to arrive digitally on PlayStation 5 on November 17, following its release on PC, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2 and Google Play Games.
Despite the positive results, Marvelous has maintained its full-year financial forecast, projecting approximately US$190.2 million in revenue and US$19 million in operating profit for the financial year ending March 2027.
With the company already recording US$17.3 million in operating profit during the first six months, its forecast suggests a considerably smaller contribution from the second half of the financial year.
Nevertheless, the results highlight the growing importance of international markets for Marvelous, particularly as franchises like Story of Seasons continue to attract players outside Japan.
