PlayStation’s Mark Cerny and AMD’s Jack Huynh have sat down in a video released today to talk through some innovations they are working on together for video game graphics generally but also future PlayStation consoles.
If you’re interested it’s probably best to watch the video that comes in under ten minutes as this seems to be some pretty advanced stuff but the gist is more efficient machine learning in uses such as FSR (AI upscaling) using “Neural Arrays” allowing multiple Compute Units (CUs) to work together on bigger tasks, new “Radiance Cores” dedicated to ray tracing (with path tracing mentioned), taking load off the CPU and GPU and lastly “Universal Compression” that compresses everything put into the GPUs memory freeing up valuable bandwidth.
Mark stresses it’s early days for this technology but casually drops “…I’m really excited about bringing them to a future console in a few years time.”
This is reassuring information dropped at the end of a week where AMD has committed massive resources to OpenAI and Xbox’s next gen plans came into question (although Xbox did reconfirm next gen plans with AMD pointing to this recent announcement).
