Nintendo has officially delayed its highly anticipated live-action Legend of Zelda film, moving the release date from March 26, 2027 to May 7, 2027. The announcement, made via Nintendo’s official X (formerly Twitter) account by series creator Shigeru Miyamoto, cites “production reasons” as the cause for the delay.
“We are working very diligently to create a film that can be enjoyed by audiences around the world,” said Miyamoto. “In order to achieve this, we’ve decided to shift the release date to allow more time for development.”
The film is a joint production between Nintendo and Sony Pictures, with Maze Runner and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes director Wes Ball at the helm. The screenplay is being written by Derek Connolly, best known for his work on Jurassic World and Kong: Skull Island.
A Summer Blockbuster in the Making
The new May 7 release positions The Legend of Zelda right at the start of the summer movie season, typically reserved for major studio tentpoles. It also avoids competition with Disney and Marvel giving Nintendo’s fantasy epic plenty of breathing room.
While plot details remain under wraps, fans can expect a classic high-fantasy adventure likely centred around Link, Princess Zelda, and the malevolent Ganon. With over three decades of lore to draw from, the possibilities are vast but expectations are even bigger.
A Carefully Crafted Debut
Nintendo has been notoriously cautious with adapting its properties, particularly after the infamous 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie misfire. But recent successes including the 2023 animated The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which grossed over $1 billion have reignited the company’s faith in cinema.
This Zelda film will mark the first major live-action attempt to bring the land of Hyrule to the big screen. According to industry insiders, the production budget is reportedly substantial, and early concept art and visual development have impressed executives at both Nintendo and Sony.
Still No Cast Revealed
Despite fan casting spreading like wildfire across social media ranging from Tom Holland as Link to Anya Taylor-Joy as Zelda no official casting announcements have been made. Filming is expected to begin in 2026, giving the studio ample time to build its cast and set the tone for what could become a multi-film saga.
The Wait Continues
While fans will need to wait just a little longer to see their favorite heroes on screen, Nintendo’s decision to delay the film suggests a commitment to quality. For a franchise as beloved and influential as The Legend of Zelda, taking the extra time to get it right might be the smartest move Nintendo could make.
The Legend of Zelda will now hit theatres worldwide on May 7, 2027.
