Shuhei Yoshida has claimed he was pushed out of his role leading PlayStation’s first-party studios by Jim Ryan following internal disagreements.
In a recent interview, Yoshida said Ryan “wanted to remove me from first-party because I didn’t listen to him,” adding that he was asked to carry out decisions he described as “ridiculous”, which he refused.
“He asked to do some ridiculous things, and I said ‘No.’”
Yoshida previously served as head of Sony Worldwide Studios, overseeing many of PlayStation’s most critically acclaimed first-party titles before transitioning in 2019 to lead initiatives focused on indie developers.
At the time, the move was framed publicly as a strategic shift rather than a fallout. However, Yoshida’s latest comments suggest there may have been behind-the-scenes tension between leadership during a period when PlayStation was undergoing broader structural changes.
Neither Sony nor Ryan has responded to the claims.
The comments offer a rare look into internal decision-making at PlayStation during a key transition period, and raise new questions about how creative direction and corporate strategy may have clashed at the highest level of the company.
