Sony closed its June 2026 State of Play showcase with one of the event’s biggest surprises: the reveal of God of War: Laufey, a brand-new entry in Santa Monica Studio’s acclaimed action-adventure series.
After months of rumours suggesting a new God of War project was in development, the reveal confirmed something few expected Faye, the wife of Kratos and mother of Atreus, will serve as the game’s protagonist.
Returning actress Deborah Ann Woll reprises her role as Laufey, with the story seemingly taking place after her death, exploring a mysterious afterlife filled with creatures and figures drawn from multiple mythologies.
A New Perspective on the God of War Universe
The reveal trailer was accompanied by more than 20 minutes of uninterrupted gameplay, offering an extensive look at what appears to be the opening chapter of the adventure.
While retaining the cinematic presentation and visceral combat that have defined the Norse-era God of War games, Laufey introduces a noticeably different combat style. Faye appears significantly more agile than Kratos, relying on swift movements, fluid combos, and acrobatic attacks rather than overwhelming brute force.
The gameplay showcased:
- Fast-paced melee combat
- Large-scale mythological creatures
- Exploration through surreal afterlife environments
- Cinematic storytelling sequences
- A massive boss encounter teased during the demonstration
Exploring Faye’s Untold Story
Although Santa Monica Studio is keeping story details under wraps, the reveal suggests Faye’s journey through the afterlife is far from peaceful. The mysterious realm she inhabits appears to be fractured, with influences from various mythological traditions colliding together.
For years, Faye has remained one of the most important yet least explored characters in the modern God of War saga. Her actions set the events of both God of War and God of War Ragnarök into motion, making Laufey an opportunity to finally experience her story firsthand.
The game’s darker tone, emotional focus, and fresh perspective on the franchise could make it one of the most unique entries in the series to date.
God of War: Laufey is scheduled to launch in 2027 for PlayStation 5.
