Ghost Recon Wildlands has received a major free update nearly a decade after its original release, with Last Rites bringing new story content, gameplay options, and a long list of customization features to the tactical shooter.
The update is now available on PS4 and PS5, with the PS5 version receiving a major technical upgrade featuring 4K resolution and 60 FPS support.
A New Story in a Darker Bolivia
The centerpiece of Last Rites is a brand-new story mission set in a darker and more oppressive version of Bolivia.
The Ghosts are sent into territory controlled by Los Penitentes, a fanatical cult led by a mysterious figure known as La Llorona.
Once viewed as an icon of justice, La Llorona has become a ruthless leader whose followers wear masks and carry out her violent interpretation of justice. The new mission explores her past, the betrayal that shaped her, and her growing obsession with revenge.
Players will uncover more about the character and her followers through documents and audio recordings scattered throughout the world.
More Freedom for Players
Ubisoft has also significantly expanded the game’s customization options, particularly for players who enjoy creating their own rules and role-playing scenarios.
New Ghost Parameters allow players to adjust things such as:
- Instant death
- Unlimited revives
- One or two primary weapons
- Whether unused ammunition is retained when reloading
New World and Session Settings also allow players to change environmental and gameplay conditions, including weather, time of day, enemy patrol frequency, alarms, and jammers.
Co-op players can even enable friendly fire.
Difficulty settings have also been expanded, allowing players to individually adjust elements such as enemy perception, endurance, and vehicle durability.
Plenty of Free Content
The update also unlocks a significant amount of previously restricted content, including weapons, equipment, camouflage options, and challenge rewards.
All Ghost War PvP classes can now be unlocked for free, while additional customization items have been added to the Character Smith.
Players who complete Last Rites will also receive a special 25th Anniversary Operator Skin.
PlayStation Plus members can additionally unlock an exclusive La Llorona Iconic Skin, the P416 Micteca, and the 4-SHUR Blue Leader Sunglasses.
With Last Rites, Ubisoft is clearly leaning into what has kept Ghost Recon Wildlands relevant for almost a decade: freedom, experimentation, and letting players create their own way of playing.
For a game approaching its tenth anniversary, it’s an impressive amount of new content and a pretty good excuse to return to Bolivia.
