The developer behind Atelier Ryza is taking the franchise in a surprisingly different direction with RyzaChat: AI, a mobile chat-based RPG that uses artificial intelligence to shape its storytelling and interactions.
Despite the game’s use of AI, the developers have confirmed that no AI-generated artwork will be used.
Instead, RyzaChat: AI will use illustrations created by human artists under the supervision of original character designer Toridamono. The developers explained that the artwork itself isn’t generated by AI; only the combination and movement of existing visual assets will change based on the player’s conversations.
No. We do not use any image generation AI. The illustrations are created by hand under the supervision of the original character designer, Toridamono-sensei. Only the “combination of movements” of the materials changes in response to the conversation; the illustrations themselves are not automatically generated.
The bigger idea behind the game is to turn Atelier Ryza into an open-ended, choose-your-own-adventure experience. Rather than following a completely predetermined script, players will be able to communicate with Ryza and influence how their adventure develops through their conversations.
It’s essentially taking the way some people already use AI chatbots to create interactive stories and building an actual game around the concept.
RyzaChat: AI isn’t the first game to experiment with AI-driven storytelling, but its decision to keep the visual side of the experience entirely human-created makes it an interesting case.
Whether players are comfortable with AI handling parts of a game’s narrative is another question entirely. But at least in this case, the game’s artwork isn’t being handed over to an image generator.
