With Gamescom 2026 just around the corner, a new report suggests Xbox could have a major surprise announcement planned for the event.
According to industry insider Jez Corden, Xbox is preparing to reveal an unexpected sequel during Gamescom 2026, potentially as part of Opening Night Live. While details remain scarce, the project is reportedly a new entry in an existing franchise.
The rumour has already sparked plenty of speculation, with classic Xbox franchises such as Banjo-Kazooie and Project Gotham Racing being thrown around by fans. However, insider NateTheHate has seemingly ruled out Banjo-Kazooie, stating that the announcement is “not Banjo” and instead describes it as a “new game in a series.”
More intriguingly, NateTheHate claims the game is not being developed by a Microsoft-owned studio, suggesting Xbox could be partnering with an external developer to revive or continue an established IP.
That distinction makes the rumour particularly interesting. Rather than another first-party Xbox project, this could potentially be a third-party collaboration or a new installment in a franchise that Xbox has previously been associated with.
Unfortunately, that’s where the information currently ends. Neither Xbox nor Microsoft has officially confirmed the rumored announcement, and there is no indication yet of which franchise could be involved.
With Gamescom Opening Night Live taking place on August 26, we shouldn’t have to wait much longer to find out whether Xbox really does have a surprise sequel waiting in the wings.
What do you think Xbox could be announcing? Could we finally see the return of a classic franchise, or is this something nobody is expecting?
