RuneScape 4 Officially Announced and Being Developed in Unreal Engine

Jagex has unveiled a new MMO set in the RuneScape universe, with the project growing from an originally planned Dragonwilds expansion.

Jagex has officially announced RuneScape 4 during RuneFest 2026, revealing that the next entry in the long-running franchise is being developed using Unreal Engine for the first time in the series’ history.

Alongside the announcement, the studio released a teaser trailer offering an early look at the ambitious new project. Details remain limited, but the game is expected to feature dragons, large-scale exploration, and new adventuring opportunities within the RuneScape universe.

According to Jesse America, executive producer of RuneScape: Dragonwilds, the project initially began as an expansion for the survival game. However, early prototypes and design concepts quickly grew beyond the scope of downloadable content, prompting the team to turn it into a standalone MMO.

Jagex says the team recognised that the project deserved to become its own game as its ambitions became clearer.

With development still in its early stages, further details about RuneScape 4, including its release date and platforms, have yet to be announced. More information is expected as development progresses.
