ASUS TUF Gaming B850M-Plus: Hands-On Hardware & Features

ASUS TUF Gaming B850M-Plus with box

The ASUS TUF Gaming B850M-Plus motherboard packs a punch but holds focus on the things most important to the core gaming experience. The TUF Gaming range from ASUS sits between the Prime and Strix hardware offerings, finding a good balance between feature set and price. The bonus challenge this board takes on is the fact that it is of the Micro-ATX motherboard form-factor, forcing the designers to really think about what is absolutely core to the gaming experience on PC to make the mid sized board desirable.

This article focuses on the physical design, build quality, layout, and feature set of the ASUS TUF Gaming B850M-Plus, based on hands‑on inspection. If you first want to know more about what a motherboard is and how it works, check out our “What is a motherboard?” article.

What’s in the box?

The TUF Gaming B850M-Plus unboxing experience is great, true to the TUF brand, it just features exactly what is needed for a great gaming rig, nothing more, nothing less. There is no full manual in the box, but it is easily accessible on the ASUS website here.

Included in the box is the following:

  • TUF Gaming B850M-Plus Micro-ATX motherboard
  • Quick start guide
  • SATA cables (2)
  • M.2 accessories
  • TUF Gaming stickers

Design and build quality

The TUF Gaming B850M-Plus is a great feeling motherboard, with solid design choices and cool aesthetics, it instantly feels like it is going to be a solid foundation for your gaming PC and has everything needed to fill out a Micro-ATX case.

The motherboard gets the essentials absolutely correct but ASUS has thrown a few extras in to meet the moment, for example the main PCIe slot has a lever over on the righthand side of the board just above where the top of a large graphics card would be, to release the card without having to get a finger between the M.2 heatsink and the card itself.

The single USB C port on the back I/O panel is a bit of a limitation, but it feels like it aligns with the board exclusively targeting gamers instead of sort of becoming an all-rounder board because it has the most and best of everything like the likes of the ROG Strix boards. In return for this more focused offering from the TUF series, the pricing is quite reasonable. The version of this motherboard with WiFi included is a little over $300 AUD at time of publication (WiFi is absolutely worth having for the flexibility if the build budget allows).

Overall, the board well justifies the price and even more so this late in the lifecycle as the price comes down. The board is easy to build with and the Micro-ATX trade-offs are fairly chosen. Whilst there is plenty of power for the CPU to be overclocked, that might be the one area where depending on how far you wish to go, more money spent on the motherboard would be worth considering.

Technical Features

Since the AMD CPU sockets stay unchanged for many CPU releases there are some generational differences on some of the PCIe lanes depending on whether you have a 9000/7000 Series Ryzen CPU or 8000 Series, it offers interesting upgrade options but given the TUF Gaming B850M-Plus has been out for nearly two years, it might be best to avoid any limitations from CPU choice, if the budget allows.

The ASUS TUF Gaming B850M-Plus is designed to support everything from mainstream Ryzen 5 processors to high-end Ryzen 9 chips. Large heatsinks around the CPU area help manage heat during gaming and demanding workloads, while dual CPU power connectors provide additional headroom for enthusiasts and future upgrades. For most PC builders, the board offers plenty of power and cooling capacity for a modern gaming PC.

Core “Gamer”

There is something about the TUF branding that I can’t quite put my finger on, like you know it’s not ASUS’ top end ROG Strix hardware, but you feel like TUF is going to keep up with it, the branding and marketing are very well done. Aesthetically, the board absolutely feels like it is made exclusively for gamers and alongside the technology onboard (and choices made by the design team), it feels like it punches above its weight. In my personal machine I have a ROG Strix motherboard paired with a TUF Gaming series graphics card and have found crossing over the two brands perfectly okay!
