The studio behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age is reportedly shutting down after more than 30 years, with its next Mass Effect project cancelled during early development.
BioWare has announced that it is closing its doors, bringing an end to more than three decades of game development and confirming the cancellation of its next Mass Effect project.
In a statement shared on social media, the studio reflected on its legacy, highlighting franchises such as Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age and Mass Effect.
“Now, after more than three decades of shared adventures, BioWare is closing, and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending,” the statement reads.
The studio acknowledged the difficulty of the announcement, saying its immediate priority is supporting its employees through the transition.
“There is nothing easy about writing those words. Our focus right now is on our incredibly talented team who put their hearts into these games, and supporting one another through this transition.”
BioWare also thanked its community for helping bring its worlds and characters to life, recognising the impact players have had on its games over the years.
The End of an Era for BioWare
Founded in 1995, BioWare became one of the most recognisable names in role-playing games, earning a devoted following through its emphasis on player choice, memorable characters and story-driven adventures.
The studio’s closure marks a significant moment for the industry, particularly for fans of Mass Effect and Dragon Age. The cancellation of the next Mass Effect project also leaves the franchise’s future uncertain.
The announcement follows reports of wider cuts at publisher Electronic Arts, with approximately 400 jobs reportedly affected across the company.
